Frequently Asked Questions

Why Jiu Jitsu?

With a focus on technique over strength, Jiu Jitsu is a highly effective martial art suitable for all sizes and strengths. We emphasize self-defense, physical fitness, and mental discipline, which support students from all walks of life.
Jiu Jitsu isn’t easy. By moving through challenges and improving skills and stamina, students are positioned to develop grit and perseverance, which will help them in every area of their life - from academics, to athletics, to friendship-making and responsibility in the home.

What if I’m involved in other sports?

Jiu Jitsu is an incredible compliment to other athletics.  With many classes  to choose from each week, we encourage our members to work their Jiu Jitsu schedule around activities with more restrictive schedules.

Is Jiu Jitsu effective for dealing with bullying?

Absolutely. Our Jiu Jitsu program serves students who are being bullied AND students who are acting out as bullies.  By  promoting self-confidence and assertiveness alongside self-restraint and self-awareness, we instill a strong sense of respect and discipline, creating an anti-bully environment. Our instructors actively address and educate students on conflict resolution and prevention.

How are classes organized, and what can I expect during a typical session?

Classes are structured to accommodate all skill levels. We start with a warm-up, followed by technique, drills and sparring. For our kids' classes, we pump up the fun by closing with a game.  Our experienced instructors provide personalized guidance, to keep beginners safe and advanced students challenged.. You can expect an atmosphere that encourages growth and camaraderie.

Can someone with no martial arts background join the Jiu Jitsu classes?

For sure. Our classes are designed for brand new beginners and seasoned grapplers alike. Our instructors will tailor their guidance to your skill level, ensuring a positive and progressive learning experience. When necessary, we’ll use our ample mat size to break out our larger class into smaller groups to facilitate personalized and tailored instruction.

Can I try a class before committing to a membership?

Please do! We invite any student considering training in jiu jitsu for the first time or considering moving to our gym to join us for a free, no obligation trial class. Your trail class is a great opportunity to meet our instructors, connect with other members and get a feel for our training environment before making a commitment. Some students (especially your littlest kids) may prefer to observe a class or 3 before participating in their trial class.  If your child needs extra time to warm up, please let us know so we can support them in making a slow and smooth transition into our environment.

Is a Uniform or Equipment required for Jiu Jitsu classes, and where can I get it?

If it’s your first time training with us, we ask that you please arrive to class 20-30 mins early so we can fit you for a trial gi and belt. If you prefer to join the trail class in your own gi, please arrive 15 mins before class. GRPL HAUS branded gis and rash guards will be arriving soon and are available now for pre-order. We have a have a stock of mouth guards available for purchase onsite.

Is there a minimum or maximum age for participating in Jiu Jitsu classes?

We offer classes starting at age 3. There is no upper age limit. Our classes are structured to accommodate different age groups, ensuring a positive and safe training environment for everyone.

My child is slow to warm up to new people and experiences, how can you help?

Some kids hop right onto the mats, but most need time to acclimate. For students who take their time warming up, we recommend a longer-acclimation period.

Our instructors and staff are trained to support kids of all ages through a child-led, non-forced transition. If you think your student may benefit from a slower transition, let us know so we can work together to make their experience as seamless as possible.

How many classes per week are recommended for optimal progress?

Even a single training session is more than most people will ever do in their lifetime. Build the schedule that works for you. To get the most out of your membership and make steady progress, we recommend attending classes 2-3 times per week. If you can come more, great. If you need to come less, also great. Students typically adjust their frequency as needed to accommodate participation in other sports and activities.

How does the ranking system work, and how are promotions determined?

Rank promotions are based on a combination of attendance, demonstrated skill, and time spent training. Our instructors carefully assess each student's progress and award promotions when they believe the individual has achieved the necessary proficiency and understanding of the techniques to warrant a promotion.

Do I have to participate in sparring, and is it safe for beginners?

While sparring is an essential aspect of Jiu Jitsu, it is not mandatory. We prioritize safety and provide a controlled environment for sparring. Our instructors closely supervise and guide sparring sessions to ensure that everyone can learn and practice in a safe and supportive manner. We pride ourselves on a culture of sportsmanship and camaraderie, when you are invited to spar AND feel ready, your training partners will be ready to support your learning.

Will there be a focus on competition?

We offer Comp Classes to further support our students who are, or who want to be on the competition track We will be participating in local, state and national competitions. We support and encourage first-time competitors and seasoned competitors alike, but do not require our students to compete.

Who do I reach out to if I have feedback or need help solving an issue or a problem and how do I reach out to them?

Any of the four members of our leadership team are open and available to support our members. While we encourage folks to address issues directly and in person, we understand that can be uncomfortable, difficult or impractical. We welcome emails, phone calls and/or requests to schedule a meeting. If we don’t know it’s an issue, we can’t work towards making it better. Feedback is a gift.
